What is Sceneline?

Sceneline is a free movie quote game. You get one picture, a single frame from a film, series or anime, and you have to name the line of dialogue said in that scene. Get it and the scene plays back to you. It runs in the browser, there is nothing to install and nothing to sign up for, and there are 88 scenes in the vault right now (68 films, 18 TV scenes and 2 anime scenes).

How the game works

  1. 1

    One frame, no credits

A single still from a film, TV series or anime. The title, the year and the clip stay on the server until the round is over. The page you are looking at does not know the answer either.

  2. 2

    Type the line

Blanks show how many words were said and how long each one is. You get three tries, and close counts. Typos are forgiven, and “I’ll” and “I will” count as the same answer.

  3. 3

    Name the rest for more

The title, the character and the release year each pay a bonus. You only get it if you type it yourself. Spend a token to reveal one and it pays nothing.

The full rules and scoring tables go into what each answer is worth and how the clock changes it.

What you can play

Scenes come from films, TV and anime, across every genre in the vault. Browse one slice of it below, or filter the game itself with the bar above the deck.

Questions people ask

What is Sceneline?
Sceneline is a free movie quote game you play in the browser. You are shown a single still frame from a film, TV series or anime and have to type the line of dialogue spoken in that scene. There is no sign-up.
How do you play?
Look at the frame, then type the line you think is said in it. You get 3 tries per scene. The number and length of the words are shown as blanks, so you know the shape of the line before you guess. After the line, you can also name the title, the character and the year for bonus points. Where the scene has a clip, it plays once the round is over.
Does the quote have to be word-perfect?
No. Close answers count for 40% of the points, small typos are forgiven, contractions are treated as their full form (so "I'll be back" and "I will be back" are the same answer), and a character's first name is enough.
How is the score worked out?
A correct line is worth up to 1,000 points, minus 250 for each extra try and 120 for each word you reveal. Bonus answers pay the title (+100), the character (+150) and the year (+200). The whole round is then multiplied by the scene's difficulty (easy ×0.8, medium ×1 and hard ×1.4) and by the pace you chose: slow (120 seconds, ×0.85), fast (60 seconds, ×1) and extra fast (30 seconds, ×1.25).
What is a paragraph scene?
Most scenes ask for one line. A paragraph scene asks for a whole chunk of the scene, several sentences of it, and pays up to 3,000 points instead of 1,000. They are judged on substance rather than exact wording, because nobody recalls a speech word for word, and a close one still pays 50% of the pot. The clock runs longer on them, and the board says "Passage" before you start.
Is it only movies?
No. Scenes come from films, TV series and anime, and you can filter the game to one of them or to a single decade.

Four more, including how names and recovery codes work, are on the how to play page. The leaderboard shows who is ahead today.
